Do Investors Care About ESG? Navigating the Maze for Valuation Professionals

As the ESG and sustainability regulatory landscape continues to evolve, companies must consider how to comply and respond to these regulatory requirements, while balancing broader stakeholder expectations. Kroll expert Carla Nunes will be discussing the results of Kroll’s “ESG and Global Investor Returns”, including a review of results for Western Europe by industry. She will summarize some of the latest academic research and studies on this topic that relate to business valuation.

Carla will also highlight some of the current ESG and sustainability regulatory developments and what to watch for in 2025. Carla will conclude with a brief discussion on whether ESG/ sustainability can be incorporated in the valuation of a business or investment.

Kroll Philadelphia I Managing Director Valuation Advisory Services

Managing Director in the Office of Professional Practice of Kroll, based in Philadelphia, USA. She has over 25 years of experience. In that role, Carla provides firm-wide technical guidance on a variety of valuation, financial reporting and tax issues. In addition, Carla is the Global Leader of Kroll’s Valuation Digital Solutions group, which produces cost of capital thought leadership content and data housed in the Cost of Capital Navigator. Prior to these roles, Carla was part of the Valuation Advisory Services business unit, performing engagements primarily for financial reporting and tax purposes in a variety of industries at Kroll’s predecessor firms, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Standard & Poor’s, and Duff & Phelps.

Carla has authored a multitude of articles, studies and book chapters, including Kroll’s annual U.S. and European Goodwill Impairment Studies, Kroll’s “ESG and Global Investor Returns Study” (2023), the “Valuation Handbook” series, and various other publications. She was a contributing author to the 4th and 5th editions of “Cost of Capital: Applications and Examples”, by Shannon Pratt and Roger Grabowski, as well as “The Art of Valuation” published by The Appraisal Foundation. Carla is a frequent speaker in webinars and conferences on the topics of cost of capital, the economy, ESG, goodwill impairment, cross-border issues and valuation in general.
